Preserving Culture Through Storytelling

In May 2026, I received an invitation from Rise the Fenua (RTF) to join the media team for Vai Nati, their inaugural cultural event held on July 18, 2026. As someone deeply connected to the Polynesian community, it was an opportunity that meant far more than photographing another event. It was a chance to help preserve moments of culture, identity, and community through visual storytelling.

Rise the Fenua is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the Tahitian community through cultural education, youth empowerment, and community engagement. Under the leadership of its Board of Directors—Hananui Swider, Leilani Swider, Anavai Swider, and Tatiana Manalo—the organization has created programs and events that encourage younger generations to remain connected to their heritage while building a strong and supportive community.

Vai Nati embodied that mission.

Rather than centering solely on performances, the event created a space where families, artists, musicians, dancers, and cultural practitioners could gather to celebrate what connects them. Every performance, conversation, and embrace reinforced a shared identity that extends well beyond the islands themselves.

Honoring Those Who Carry the Culture Forward

The evening was masterfully guided by Tylon Teaitu Buendia, whose accomplishments extend far beyond the stage. Best dancer at the 2018 Ori Tahiti World Cup, Tylon represents a new generation of cultural leaders who continue to elevate Tahitian dance on an international level while remaining deeply rooted in tradition.

Joining him as co-master of ceremonies was Eli Tiguelo, a highly respected Tahitian dancer, educator, and cultural ambassador whose years of experience have helped shape Polynesian dance communities throughout Southern California and beyond. His ability to blend historical context, humor, and heartfelt storytelling gave the audience a deeper appreciation for every performance that followed.

Together, they transformed the event from a showcase into an immersive cultural experience.

A Celebration of Three Distinguished Groups

Vai Nati featured performances from three respected Tahitian dance organizations, each bringing its own artistic identity while remaining grounded in authentic Polynesian traditions.

Te Varua 'Ori is known for its emphasis on cultural authenticity, musicality, and storytelling through dance. Their performances celebrate the spirit and history of Tahiti while developing dancers who understand the meaning behind every movement.

Hiva Katoa has built a reputation for expressive choreography and powerful stage presence, blending technical excellence with genuine cultural respect. Their performances demonstrate the balance between preserving traditional forms and inspiring modern audiences.

Tavake Rereata OC represents the growing strength of Orange County's Tahitian community. Through education, performance, and mentorship, the group provides opportunities for dancers of all ages to connect with Polynesian culture while fostering a strong sense of belonging.

Although each group possesses its own unique style and artistic voice, all three share the same purpose: preserving and passing forward Tahitian culture for future generations.

The Role of Visual Storytelling

My role throughout Vai Nati was to create a visual record of the event as it unfolded—capturing not only the performances themselves, but the atmosphere that surrounded them.

From the opening welcomes to the final performances, I focused on genuine moments of celebration: dancers taking the stage with confidence, musicians setting the rhythm, families cheering from the audience, children experiencing their culture firsthand, and the interactions that naturally occurred throughout the day. Rather than directing scenes, I worked unobtrusively to document the event as participants experienced it.

My approach to event photography is rooted in documentary storytelling. Every image is created with the intention of preserving authentic emotion and context while allowing the event to speak for itself. For organizations like Rise the Fenua, these photographs become more than promotional assets—they become part of the visual history of a community dedicated to preserving and sharing its cultural traditions.

The Result

Vai Nati demonstrated how photography can serve something larger than promotion.

It can preserve memory.

It can strengthen community.

It can honor the people dedicating countless hours to ensuring that language, music, dance, and tradition continue to thrive for generations to come.

Being invited to contribute to that mission was both a privilege and a responsibility. Through every image captured, the goal remained the same: to tell the story with authenticity, respect, and an understanding that culture is best documented from within—not simply observed from the outside.
